NBN and fibre

FTTN customers will no longer need a faster plan to get full fibre from March 2027

NBN Co is dropping the high-speed plan requirement, extending the change it made for FTTC in July.

From 31 March 2027, internet providers will be able to offer eligible Fibre to the Node customers a full fibre upgrade on any wholesale speed plan. Until then, many FTTN customers must order a service based on a wholesale plan of 100/40 Mbps or above to qualify.

NBN Co says more than 1.5 million homes and businesses have now moved from copper to full fibre. Fibre is the largest technology on the network at around 39 per cent of connections.

Reading the reliability claim

NBN Co describes full fibre as about six times more reliable than copper-based connections, and also says it has a 12 per cent lower fault rate. Those two numbers measure different things. Its footnotes show the first is based on service dropouts across FTTN and FTTC during 2025, and the second compares FTTP with FTTN on fault rate. Both are NBN Co’s own data.

What it means

If you are on FTTN and your current speed suits you, you can wait until the end of March and upgrade without changing tier. If you want fibre sooner, the existing high-speed route still applies. Check your address first, as eligibility varies.
